STEP 2.

SELECT YOUR GARDEN TYPE

Native
A very flexible style, a native garden simply uses a range of Australian natives to create any effect desired. There are native plant choices that suit formal, cottage and other garden styles. Alternatively, you can design an informal, natural look garden, which has plantings and a style which reflects the local Adelaide bush. Native plants are tough, waterwise and low maintenance. Regardless of the look of your garden, if your plantings are dominated by native species, please use this style.
Considered low Water use
Cottage
A cottage garden uses a wide range of colourful perennials, small trees and shrubs to create a vibrant, dense and interesting garden. Beds are informal in style and employ small paths, curved edges and plants that spill over borders and out of pots.
Considered medium water use.
Mediterranean
A clean, modern style, Mediterranean gardens use limited plantings, bright colours, paving, textured walls and large pots and planters to create an interesting, peaceful and waterwise garden.
Considered low water use.
Formal
A formal garden uses straight lines and paths, hedges, small, clipped trees and standard shrubs to create a garden that is classic, clean and structured. Formal gardens often incorporate large existing shade trees as feature points. Fountains and statues add interest.
Considered medium water use.
Modern Australian
Popularised by TV garden designers, the Modern Australian style uses a limited palette of plantings to create a striking, architectural garden. Plantings include spiky, strappy leafed and unusually shaped plants that silhouette against clean walls, coloured pebble mulches and paving
Considered low water use.
Adelaide No-care
The Adelaide low maintenance garden is as much a response to gardening through a drought, where only the hardiest plants survive. However, it need not be a style which indicates a lack of care. By careful, waterwise plant choices and dense planting in small beds, a simple garden can be created that will survive and even thrive on neglect.
Considered low water use.
